Tools, adhesives, substrates, grout, and materials are essential foundations, but they are not what make a mosaic visually compelling. What makes a mosaic truly stand out is design, intention, and creativity.

Through monthly lessons, you’ll learn how to decode why certain colors, textures, patterns, materials, and visual styles resonate with you, and how to intentionally embed those preferences into your work.

Each lesson is paired with a guided design challenge. Over the course of the year, you will complete nine mosaic design challenge samples that become a personal design library you can revisit and draw from in future work.

That’s a design problem, which is exactly what we’re covering in Mosaic Design School!
Who This is for
This program is ideal for artists who already know how to make mosaics and are ready to take their work to the next level creatively.
This is not a beginner-level program.
It is assumed you understand mosaic technical basics (i.e, where to find materials, how to cut, grout, and use adhesives).
You’ll start by learning my “recipe”, a mix-and-match formula for a strong and beautiful contemporary mixed-media mosaic as your foundation.
It’s all about balancing scale, texture, color, and shape. Then we mix in something vintage and something new, blending materials to invite storytelling into every piece.
Instead of focusing on the “how” we’ll focus on the “why” and the “what” behind your work.
In other words:
Why certain design choices work (like color combinations, texture, scale, and movement); and
What elements to use to achieve a strong visual composition.
Technical instruction is intentionally excluded so you can fully immerse yourself in creative thinking, design confidence, and artistic growth.
Then, over the course of the year, you’ll explore what YOUR unique recipe or visual language is.
My focus is on helping you find your own creative voice. Something recognizable, something you fully own, and something that makes your mosaic work far more fulfilling.
You’ll be trained in the “art of noticing”, the practice of consciously observing what colors, textures and details your eyes linger on and make your heart skip a beat!
By the end of the year, you’ll have so much more intentionality to your work, being able to “see” and find a visual language for what inspires you and the key elements of your style.

Foundations Months: Jan–Feb
Challenge/Assignment Months: Mar-Nov
Wrap Up/Summary Month: Dec
Format: All lessons, Q&A and Design Challenges will be pre-recorded. The final month of the program (Dec 2026) will be a live meeting.
Optional: Challenge Kits will be available month to month.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need prior mosaic experience?
Yes, this program is designed for artists who already know how to make mosaics. You should feel comfortable with basic skills like cutting tiles, using adhesives, and grouting. If you’re brand new, I recommend starting with a beginner’s mosaic class first.
I’ve been making mosaics for years — will this membership still inspire me?
Definitely! This program is especially designed for experienced mosaic artists. Most programs teach techniques NOT design. So most artists can benefit from some extra support in this area. If you’ve got experience with more traditional mosaic styles, you’ll love learning more about how to create more contemporary mixed-media mosaics as well!
Are there any live calls?
The content is all pre-recorded and you can feel free to explore it on-demand, at your own pace. So there is no need to stress about time-zones or fitting this in around your other commitments. We will have one optional live Zoom call to celebrate our final showcase of completed challege assingments in December.
What if I can’t keep up with the pace or need to skip a few months?
That’s okay! As long as you’re an active member, you’ll have access to the recordings. So even if you can’t keep up with the program pace, you can work on it privately at your own pace.
Will I get personal feedback on my projects?
Yes! You’ll be able to submit questions to Sharra and get guidance on your challenge projects. Plus, you’ll benefit from seeing how she answers other members’ questions.
What will I have by the end of the program?

Do I need the Challenge Kits to participate?
No! Kits are optional and you can use your own materials to complete the design challenges. The kits are just a convenient, curated way to explore new materials and palettes each month.
Is this program suitable for international students?
Absolutely! The lessons are online and pre-recorded, so you can participate from anywhere. Challenge Kits can be shipped internationally, with shipping costs applied.
Do I have to share my work with the group?
Not at all! Sharing is completely optional. Many members love showing their creations and getting feedback, but you can absolutely participate, learn, and enjoy the classes without ever posting your work. This is your creative space, you share only if and when you feel comfortable.
How long will I have access to the recordings?
As long as your Mosaic Membership is active, you’ll have full access to all class recordings, tutorials, and resources in both the membership library and MDS. This means you can revisit lessons anytime and work at your own pace. If life gets busy and you fall behind, you can continue privately and return to the material whenever you’re ready. Continued access beyond the year is available through membership renewal.
